India and the UK have restarted negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) after nearly a year-long pause. Business visas will be a key part of the discussions, but immigration policies will not be included.
Focus on Business Mobility
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized the need for faster and more liberal visa policies to support growing trade and investment between the two nations. Indian businesses have a strong presence in the UK, and British companies continue to invest in India, making streamlined business visa processes essential.
No Discussions on Immigration
The UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, clarified that immigration policies are handled separately and will not be part of the FTA talks. However, business mobility remains a crucial element for both economies.
Short-Term Visas for Service Professionals and Students
India is pushing for short-term work visas for professionals and students, similar to policies in countries like the US, Canada, and Australia. This would allow students to gain work experience after completing their education.
Unresolved Issues in Negotiations
The talks, which were stalled in May 2024 before the UK elections, are resuming with several key issues still unresolved. These include rules of origin, tariff concessions on electric vehicles, and regulatory norms for the service sector.
Progress So Far
Since the FTA negotiations began in January 2022, 13 rounds of discussions have taken place. The agreement covers 26 chapters, including trade, investments, services, and intellectual property rights.
